CLOUDY COVERAGE from WEATHERING THE STORM, by Gary A. England. University of Oklahoma Press. 225 pp. $26.95.
The television tornado frenzy had become the subject of countless conversations, letters, phone calls, and newspaper stories. Television program interruptions had increased in frequency and duration. False sightings of tornadoes, inflated wind speeds, and larger than life hail size reports had become the rule. Even winter storms lost their purity. One reporter, broadcasting live, positioned himself behind a very small snow drift, squatting down, to make the drift appear huge. On another report, a spotter told the audience that slick roads had traffic nearly at a standstill, while behind him vehicles could be seen moving by at a rapid rate of speed. |
